Grading Policies
Your grade in the class will be determined by:
-
Weekly homework assignment
There will be no in-class exams! In a realistic situation, you will
have the opportunity to make mistakes and correct your work before presenting
it for judgment. Exams do not allow this opportunity.
Weekly homework assignments
Each week, several problems will be posted on the class Web site in the
notes for that week's lesson. Practically all of the problems will involve
writing SAS programs to provide realistic analyses of data. Other problems
will require short answers. You will be notified which problems will be
due the following week. These problems will be assigned at random, so you
will not necessarily be assigned the same problems as any other student.
You may work on the other problems which are posted for your own benefit,
but only your assigned problems will be graded. You may work on more problems,
but please turn in only the assigned ones.
If the problem requires a SAS program, you must turn in a listing of
the program and a copy of the resulting output. You can use these to create
a notebook of examples for yourself. If the problem requires a short answer,
please write your answer on a separate page. Be sure to write your name
on your assignment!
You will receive 0, 1, or 2 points on each assigned problem.

-
The problem asks for a SAS program, and the program you turn in does not
execute due to flawed programming statements. You have the opportunity
to write and execute programs to check for errors, so turning in a program
that does not execute properly is inexcusable.
-
Turning in a solution for a problem that was not assigned to you.
-
Turning in an assignment without putting your name on it.
-
Your solution is illegible or messy.
-
Your solution is not turned in before the next class or at the beginning
of that class, and you do not have a University-excused absence. There
are much more than the required maximum 100 total points. If you miss one
or two assignemnts, you still have a good chance to get an A.
-
A non-programming problem has more than one mistake.
1 point
-
An assigned SAS program executes properly and provides the requested result,
but the instructions in the problem were not followed. For example, if
the problem requires that you write comment statements and you fail to
do so, you will lose a point.
-
An assigned program works, but the same task could be done in many fewer
steps with programming techniques which were discussed in class.
-
An assigned problem has a solution which is essentially correct, but some
error such as entering data incorrectly was committed.
-
A non-programming problem has one mistake.
Scores of 1 will be given only in exceptional cases.
2 points
-
An assigned program works properly with no errors, and all instructions
were followed properly.
-
If a short answer or paragraph is required, your answer is completely correct
and concise.
During the course of the semester, you will have the opportunity to earn
13x8 = 104 points from these weekly assignments.
Final grades: Out of 13x8=104 points

The official policy of the Department of Statistics prohibits assigning
D+ grades. An A should be achievable with a modest
amount of effort, even with one or two missing assignments.
