A veterinarian performed an experiment to measure the effects of a surgical procedure on kidney function in cats. Eight cats were studied. One kidney in each cat was randomly selected to have the surgical procedure performed on it, while the other kidney was not treated. The response of interest was the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), a measure of kidney efficiency. Measurements were taken at Week 0 (just before the surgical procedure) and at Weeks 1 and 2 after the surgical procedure was performed.

Twenty-five dogs were used in an experiment to study the effects of a new shampoo to alleviate itchy skin. Each dog received one of three treatments (0, 1, or 2 grams of a drug in each bottle of shampoo), and each dog was shampooed twice weekly. The researcher was concerned about allergies to the drug, so he studied total white blood cell counts and eosinophil (a type of white blood cell) counts at Weeks 0, 2, and 4 following initiation of the treatment.
