Some Emacs Modes that I Use
- AUCTeX: indispensable if you use TeX/LaTeX. Note that emacs's built in BibTeX mode is also very useful.
- Emacs Speaks Statistcs for editing R/S-plus/SAS/Stata/Xlispstat code. Most of these programs can also be run inside of emacs using ESS, which is incredibly useful.
- Gnus for mail and news. See also my.gnus.org for more information than you can stand. I have also written up some brief notes of my own on using gnus for reading mail from an IMAP server. And here is the (incredibly long) gnus reference card.
- Planner Mode (and the Planner list archive)
- The Insidious Big Brother Database(or go to the project home).
- And don't forget dired, the various programming modes, etc.
