Computation of Course Grades

Course grades will be computed as follows. First I will compute your numerical course grade as described in the course syllabus: the average of your best three quizzes accounts for 15% of the grade, the average of the two midterm exams for 50%, and the final exam for 35%. I will set an overall curve for the course based on these scores and assign you a letter grade based on this curve.

Then I will assign a letter grade to your final exam only. This grade will be determined on a strict decade scale: 90–100 = A, 80–89 = B, 70–79 = C, 60–69 = D, and less than 60 is failing.

Your final grade in the course will be the higher of these two letter grades.

This page provides a stem-and-leaf plot and a simple numerical summary of the grades on the most recent quiz or exam. Current course averages will also be posted in the same format after each exam. Of course these are not the final course grades; they are provided here just so that students can see where they stand relative to the rest of the class.
