STA 2023
Honors Introduction to Statistics
II Fall 2008 About Calculators In STA 2023 Honors, you will not be permitted to use a graphing calculator during exams, but
you are expected to have a calculator that computes some basic statistical
summaries, such as the mean and standard deviation. Any more complicated statistical procedures
will be conducted using Minitab, a statistical software package. It is recommended that you obtain a calculator
that you can use during the whole semester.
You may already have a scientific calculator that will work in this
class, or you may be able to borrow one from a friend. If you need to buy a new calculator, you
should be able to get one for under $15.
To determine if a calculator is
appropriate, look for the symbols for the mean ( All students are
responsible for knowing how to operate their calculators. The
calculator’s operating manual should have instructions on how to
compute the mean and standard deviation.
And simple, easy to follow directions often appear on a small card
that fits on the cover of scientific calculators. If you do not have either the manual or
the card for your calculator, you can sometimes find them online. Try going to the manufacturer’s
website, or do a web search for “calculator manual” and the brand
and model number that is printed on the face of the calculator (e.g.
“calculator manual TI-30Xa”). We have found one website that has
compiled instructions for hundreds of different calculator makes and
models. However, this website is part
of “geocities”, which restricts the number of visitors in a certain
time period. So many times the website
gives you a message asking you to try later.
We have no control over this website, and the link is given here only
as one more possibility. If the site
is not working when you try it, please do not email me and ask me to fix it,
because I can’t. That website
is: http://www.geocities.com/calculatorhelp/index.html. |
