On Wednesday, 8/28 the median/mean applet didn’t show. So, here is a worksheet that demonstrates what I was trying to show.

On Friday 8/30, the lecture is in two pieces: one piece has the notes and the other piece has the announcements. Please watch both videos. During the 8/30 lecture, there is a small section right when I start the lecture when there is no sound. During that period, I say, “What are the three measures of center? Yes, they are the mean, median and sometimes the mode. Today, we are going to be talking about measures of spread. When we talk about these measures of spread think about how these are influenced by outliers. The range is our first measure of spread. The range is found by taking the max – min. So, for the first problem, we get “505-121= 384” and for the second problem the mean is “810-46 = 764”. So, which one of these data sets has an outlier? Yes, the data set from the males. The “806” is an outlier.”

Lab: No Lab this week.

o   Monday:  International Year of Statistics video à https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=nTBZuQR7dRc

·         During last Friday and this Monday’s lecture, there was a severe lag time between the time that I wrote something and the time that it appeared on the screen. I have talked to video services and they have adjusted the setting. The mediasite recorder was brand new for this semester and one of the settings needed to be adjusted. It should be better for the lecture this Wednesday. I apologize for this issue.

Lab: In lab this week, you will complete Activity 3 from the lab workbook.

·         You do not need to complete anything prior to your lab time. Just make sure that you have watched the previous week’s lecture.

What To Do The First WeEk of Classes (Wednesday, August 21st – Friday, August 23rd)

Lab: For those who have lab this week, there will be a teaching assistant to give you a brief introduction to the course. Please attend lab this week so that you can find out how the course works; however, there is no graded assignment. For those who have labs on Monday and Tuesday, do not worry. Your Teaching assistant will give out the same information next week as well in addition to doing the first lab.  All Labs occur in CBD 220 (the 105 classroom building room 220). A few sections (4398, 4400, 4401, 4402, 4403, 4404, 4405, 4406) had the lab rooms numbers listed incorrectly in ISIS initially.

Lecture: Either watch lecture during 9th period MWF in NRN 137, 7th period MWF in Norman G520 or online MWF. The streaming lecture will be posted in Sakai by 5pm on the day that it was recorded. Everyone is free to watch the live or recorded lectures regardless of the section for which they are registered. The Norman G520 room only has about 20 seats, so 7th period lecture so seating will be first available. The 9th period class is much larger with 350 seats. In the past three years, we have not run out of seats in 9th period.

In the lectures, we will be going over the following.

·         Wednesday – Going over the Syllabus

·         Friday – Starting notes in the Student Lab Workbook

o   International Year of Statistics video à https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=nTBZuQR7dRc

Quizzes:

·         In E-Learning, there is a 3 point Extra Credit Quiz, called EC Quiz.

·         The quiz is about the syllabus.

·         It has 6 questions, each questions is worth 3 points each.

·         It runs from Wednesday, August 21st 8am until Monday, September 2nd midnight.

·         You have three attempts and the highest counts. The questions will appear in random order for each attempt.

FAQ:

·         I am only seeing a white page for most of the tabs in E- learning. What do I do?

o   Currently, the Firefox and IE browser are not displaying web links automatically in the E-Learning Frame. There are many weblinks in our course (Home, Syllabus, Lab Schedule, Tutoring Schedule, Calendar, Contact Us, Online Lectures, Suggested Homework, Short Videos, and Calculator). If you go to these links and you only see a blank page, here are the possible ways to fix the problem.

§  If you are having trouble seeing these pages, first try downloading and using Google Chrome.

§   To look at the pages in Firefox, there is a little shield at the top of the webpage beside the link, click on that and select “Disable Protection on this Page” from the drop-down list.

§   If you want to use IE, follow the instructions that appear on the popup that allows you to view unsecure content.

§   If you have trouble call, the computer help desk at 392-HELP.

·         Do I have to go to lab the first week of classes – August 21st to August 23rd?

o   It is optional. There isn’t a graded assignment; however, it is a good opportunity to meet your TA and to find out about the course.

·         Why don’t I see the course in E-Learning?

o   Currently, I don’t have the course published, so students currently can’t see the course. I will be releasing the course on Tuesday, August 20th. After Tuesday, August 20th, you should see “STA 2023” listed at the top of your screen. If you don’t see it, you will then want to click on “Active Sites”. The course will be listed under there.

·         When do the 1st day’s lectures appear?

o   It will appear in E-Learning in the course at the Online Lecture link after it has been recorded – about 5pm on Wednesday August 21st.

·         Do I have to have the 3rd edition of the Student Laboratory Workbook?

o   Yes. The problems have changed substantially since the 2nd edition. It should also be new.

How the course is structured:

Each STA 2023 section has two main parts: a lecture and a lab component.

Lab: Each student must attend each lab in person at their scheduled time. This is the one period section listed on the course catalog. You will be required to attend this section.

Lecture: There are two ways to watch the lecture: live or on streaming video. You may do either regardless of the section for which you are registered.

·         The live lecture will be held 9th period MWF in NRN 137 and during 7th period MWF in Norman G520.

·         The online lectures will be posted in the course management system, at lss.at.ufl.edu as they are recorded throughout the semester.
