Syllabus for Fall 2010: Syllabus

Final Grades have been posted.

The average on the final was very good.

The average on the exam was an 85.

In Sakai, you will see Exam 3 score and Exam 3 –final score. The exam 3-final score includes the extra point for those who bubbled in everything correctly.

You will also see total points for the course and Course Score.

The Grade for Course is the numerical representation of the grade. For example, an A is a 4, an A- is a 3.67, B+ is a 3.33, etc. Please see the chart below for more information.

There wasn’t a curve. You must have exactly the values below to obtain a certain grade. This grade is final and will only be changed if there was an error.

Statistical Inference Table for Test 3

Exam 3 is Saturday, December 11th from 7:30 to 9:30am (IN THE MORNING!)

Exam 3 information can be found here.

Exam rooms are also posted here.

The exam is not cumulative in the sense that I will not go back and pick topics that we haven’t seen for weeks to put on the exam. However, you are still expected to be able to answer questions about topics that may have first been covered for exam 1, but we keep using it for exam 3 materials, such as finding the mean, finding the standard deviation, reading graphs, and using the z and t table. I will expect you to be able to answer questions about confidence intervals and hypothesis test about population mean, population proportion, difference between two independent population proportions, difference between two independent population means, difference between two dependent population proportions, and difference between two dependent population means.

Total Before Final Score and LabandQuiz Total are now posted in gradebook 2  in Sakai.

Determining Grades

To find the lab and quizzes grade total (L&QTotal), take the highest 17 scores from labs and quizzes. (It is possible to earn up to 102. Anything earned above 100 is extra credit. (The two additional points.) Extra Credit Quizzes are not included in the L&QTotal, but in the total for the course.

To find your total points before the final, Total_before_Final=Exam1+Exam2+EC1+EC2+L&QTotal.

Please ignore the total of 310 points on Sakai. I have to trick Sakai into allowing the extra credit. The total number of points so far is 300 points.

To determine the number of points that you need on the final to get a particular grade, use the chart on the syllabus to determine the number of points needed.

Points needed = PointsOnSyllabusTotal_Before_Final.

I want a B, which requires at least 320 points.

TotalPoints= Exam1+Exam2+EC1+EC2+L&QTotal+Final.

Tenth Week of Classes: Monday, October 25th  through Friday, October 29th

Lectures

Lectures on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Office Hours for Megan Mocko

My office hours on Friday, October 29th  have changed to 8:45am to 10:15am. I had to change my office hours due to a meeting on campus.

Quiz

Quiz 7: This will run from Monday, October 25th  8:00 am until Thursday, October 28st  at 11:59pm. It will be worth up to 6 points. You have three attempts the highest attempt counts. This quiz material was covered in class on 10/18, 10/20 and 10/22,  chapter 8 section 1 through Chapter 8 Section 3 in the textbook.

The quiz had two correct answers for one problem, so I had to take down the quiz and correct the issue. I had to republish the quiz as Quiz 7 New. The grades for the original versions of the quiz are posted in the Gradebook as Quiz 7 – Pre or Quiz 7. I will take the highest grade of Quiz 7, Quiz 7 – New and Quiz 7 – Pre at the end of the week. On Quiz 7 New, everyone gets 4 tries including everyone who previously took the quiz.  I am terribly sorry about this. I wish that I could fix issues like this more smoothly, but Sakai does not allow me to make changes to an active quiz or to give a “fixed” quiz the same name as the old.

Lab

We are changing the lab schedule.

The quiz had an incorrect question Monday morning. I had to take it down to fix this. When I did, I accidently lost the grades of those that took it Monday morning(before 2pm). If you took the quiz Monday morning, please take it again. I apologize for this inconvenience. I am still learning Sakai. You will have 3 new tries for this version of the quiz.

Note on Monday’s Lecture:

Initially, the size of Monday’s lecture was a little too big for some people to watch the lecture effectively. Video services reduced the file size and the a newer, better version has been uploaded.

Quizzes:

There will not be any quizzes during the first week of classes.

Labs:

During the first week of classes, please go to lab. This is the one hour time slot on your ISIS schedule that meets in CBD 220. In lab, you will meet your TA and find out how the lab will work. You are highly encouraged to attend the lab, but there will not be a graded assignment this week.

Sakai Update

Eleven sections of students will not be able to enter Sakai until next Monday(8/30): 4789(R11), 4814(F2), 4816(W5), 4823(F3), 4825(F5), 4827(F6), 4829(F7), 4832(W3), 6716(W6), 6720(F4), and 9843(M3) . How the course is structured:

Each STA 2023 section has two main parts: a lecture and a lab component.

Lab: Each student must attend each lab in person at their scheduled time. This is the one period section listed on the course catalog. You will be required to attend this section.

Lecture: There are two ways to watch the lecture: live or on streaming video. You may do either regardless of the section for which you are registered.

• The live lecture will be held 9th period MWF in NRN 137 and 7th period MWF Norman G520.

• The online lecture will be posted on this webpage for the first couple of weeks of the semester. The lectures will then move into a password protected website after that. Please check back here on the first day of classes. The lecture will appear here at the end of the day.
