Faculty Positions in Molecular Biometry

The University of Wisconsin - Madison is seeking outstanding candidates for two faculty positions in molecular
biometry, at least one of which is expected to be at the senior level.  Candidates trained in mathematics,
statistics, or related fields, whose research responds to challenges from molecular and cell biology are urged to
apply. The new faculty will play a leadership role in building strong, new connections between the mathematical
and biological sciences on the campus.

Training and experience desired.  Candidates should be or have the potential to become leading researchers in
at least one of the relevant areas of the mathematical or statistical sciences and have clearly demonstrated
interests in applications in the biological sciences.  Experience working in a collaborative, interdisciplinary
environment is highly desirable.

Research.  The new faculty will be expected to establish outstanding research programs developing models and
methods of inference that exploit molecular information to guide understanding of biological systems and
processes.

Instruction.  The new faculty will teach one course per semester in the Department of Mathematics, the
Department of Statistics, or if appropriate, in one of the biological science departments.  They will be expected
to play a leadership role in developing a new mathematical sciences curriculum for students in the biological
sciences at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Consulting and collaboration.   The new faculty will work with the existing consulting programs in biometry
and biostatistics to support biological researchers in addressing problems in mathematical modeling, statistical
inference and related computational areas.  The exact nature of the consulting responsibilities will depend on the
background and interests of the individual researcher.  A significant portion of the research effort of the new
faculty will be in active collaboration with biological scientists.

Appointments.  Appointments are expected to carry instructional responsibilities in the Department of
Mathematics and/or Statistics and consulting and collaborative research responsibilities in some area of the
biological sciences.  Alternative arrangements are possible, depending on the background and interests of the
candidate.

Application procedures.  Applicants should submit a letter of application, a curriculum vita, and a statement of
research accomplishments and interests and should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to:

Thomas G. Kurtz, Chair
Molecular Biometry Search Committee
c/o Janis Simons
140 Agriculture Hall
1450 Linden Drive
Madison, WI  53706

At least one of the letters of recommendation should address the applicant's effectiveness as a teacher.

Application materials should be submitted by December 5, 2002 to ensure full consideration.
