Mathematics Vacancies

POSITIONS:  At least two tenure track positions in the Department of Mathematics.  For one of the positions, a preference will be given to a statistician.

QUALIFICATIONS:  A doctorate in mathematics or a doctorate or master's degree in statistics is required.  Applicants with a master's degree in statistics who lack a doctorate should have significant teaching experience in statistics at the undergraduate level.  Applicants must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education and present evidence of excellent teaching.  A willingness to collaborate with both students and faculty, and to become involved in university service, is essential.  It is expected that the candidate remain professionally active in the mathematics, statistics, and/or mathematics education community.  We are primarily interested in hiring outstanding teachers who will be an asset to the Department and the University.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The primary responsibility will be to teach undergraduate mathematics and/or statistics courses.  The typical teaching load is twelve credits per semester, with two or three preparations.  Applicants will also be expected to participate in scholarly activities, provide academic advising to students, and participate in department, college, and university service.

RANK AND SALARY:  Competitive.

EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT:  August 25, 2004.

MATHEMATICS AT UW-PLATTEVILLE:  The Mathematics Department, in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, has 20 full-time tenure/tenure track positions, and regularly employs an additional 4-6 academic staff.  The department offers undergraduate degrees in mathematics, mathematics education, mathematics with an emphasis in actuarial studies, and mathematics with an emphasis in finance.  The department also serves programs in engineering, science, technology, business, and education.  Mathematics class sizes are approximately 30 students.

UNIVERSITY AND PLATTEVILLE COMMUNITY:  The University of Wisconsin - Platteville, founded in 1866, enrolls approximately 5,800 students in primarily undergraduate programs leading to degrees in agriculture, the arts, business, communication, criminal justice, education, engineering, the humanities, industry, mathematics, and the sciences.  The university is recognized as a cultural and educational center for the tri-state region of Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin.  The city of Platteville has a population of approximately 10,000, and is a safe, friendly, and affordable community located 70 miles southwest of Madison in scenic southwest Wisconsin.
