Monash University

Postgraduate positions

We are seeking two highly motivated postgraduate students to work at
Monash University on a project with Telstra on developing machine
learning methods to predict customer behaviour.

In the extremely competitive telecommunication industry it is
important for Telstra to probabilistically predict their customers'
behaviour.  These predictions can be utilised in various ways,
e.g. estimate the value of the customer, detect fraud, and identify
users likely to discontinue services.

The project will tackle two important shortcomings that have been
identified in many models used to predict user behaviour. These
shortcomings are the assumptions that systems have only one kind of
user and that user behaviour does not change over time. It is planned
that these shortcomings will be addressed in a unified manner using
two learning methods, Minimum Message Length (MML) and Support Vector
Machines (SVM).

The scholarships, Aus$22,771 (tax-free) per year, (one at Clayton Campus
and one at Gippsland Campus) are funded by the Australian Research
Council (ARC) for three years. The applicants will be required to be
knowledgeable in at least one of the following areas: machine
learning, mathematics, statistics, econometrics, information theory,
algorithms, data mining or in a related area, and be proficient in
programming in C, C++ or Java.
