Lecturers (Level B)
Caulfield/Clayton campus

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Level B academics are expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of
the Department and to carry out activities to maintain and develop their
scholarly research.  A level B academic is expected to play a major role in
mentoring, decision-making, scholarship and research.

Specific duties include:

Teaching
o Conduct of tutorials
o Preparation and delivery of lectures
o Subject co-ordinator/leadership duties
o Consultation with students
o Marking and assessment of student assignments and examinations
o Administration of subjects in which the academic teaches

 Supervision
o Supervision of the program of study of honours students or of postgraduate
students engaged in course work.
o Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects.

 Research

o Conduct of research
o Publication of scholarly papers

 Administration

o Attendance at school meetings and membership of committees
o A range of administrative functions; for Level B academics, the majority of
these will be connected with the subjects in which the academic teaches.
o Involvement in professional activity.

 The successful applicant should have a sound knowledge of one or more of the
subject areas taught in the School, with particular interest in software
engineering; distributed, parallel and mobile computing; communications and
digital signal processing; digital systems hardware and architecture.

 The applicant should normally have a doctoral qualification in a relevant
discipline and/or relevant teaching and/or professional experience.

 SELECTION CRITERIA
 

 Essential
----------
o Recognised university or tertiary graduate qualification, normally a PhD,
  in a relevant discipline.
o Demonstrate academic knowledge in one of the subject areas taught in the
  School, with particular interest in software engineering; distributed,
  parallel and mobile computing; communications and digital signal processing;
  digital systems hardware and architecture.
o Ability to independently conduct lectures, tutorials, assessment and exam
  marking in relevant subject areas.
o Willingness to attend and participate in staff meetings and a limited
  number of School committees.
o Ability to coordinate graduate, undergraduate or short course subjects.
o Experiernce in publication and presentation of research results through
  conferences and/or journals.

 Desirable
----------
o Demonstration of satisfactory to high level of student performance
  assessment in tutorials and lectures at both graduate and undergraduate
  levels.
o Demonstration of prior experience in the development of subject material
  and/or subject administration.
o Examples of providing academic leadership in development of academic
  programs and activities.

 Advantageous
-------------
 o Experience in supervision of honours or postgraduate students.
 o Involvement in a professional activity of relevance to Computer Science
   (e.g.  membership of an industry committee or association).
 

Salary: Aus$52,881 - Aus$62,797 per annum.
