Postdoctoral Researcher

Sponsored Postdoctoral Fellowship with Battelle Memorial Institute

Qualifications: PhD in Statistics or Biostatistics with a demonstrated interest in spatial and spatial-temporal statistical
modeling including applications in disease mapping.

Description and Duties: Recent advances in scientific computing have made the inclusion of complex spatial and spatial-temporal structures in statistical models feasible, especially within a Bayesian hierarchical modeling framework.  One area in which these complex models find wide applicability is in the area of exposure modeling and disease mapping.  The postdoctoral researcher will share a joint appointment between the Mathematical Biosciences Institute and Battelle Memorial Institute with a half-time commitment to each group.  Duties of the postdoctoral researcher at Battelle will include the development of statistical models, methodology, and software related to spatial-temporal modeling; for more information, contact Dr. Steven Bortnick (    Research
conducted at the MBI will include disease and biomarker mapping; Dr. Noel Cressie ( of the Department of
Statistics at Ohio State will serve as the MRI postdoc mentor. Candidates must have excellent communication and computing skills.

Deadline: Screening of applications will start February 2, 2004, until the position is filled.

Applications:  Applications should include the MBI application form (available on-line at; a personal
statement of scientific activities and accomplishments, future research plans, and reasons for wishing to participate in the program; a curriculum vitae and a list of publications; and three letters of recommendation.

Applications and letters should be sent to:
