Research Associate Position

Educational Testing Service has an opening for a Research Associate position in the Center for Large Scale Assessment, part of the Research Division.  The successful candidate will provide full professional support to and collaborate with researchers by participating in the design and planning of studies that arise in the context of large-scale assessments such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress.   Responsibilities include but not limited to:

· Review operational analysis output, in order to detect unusual results and/or indications of deviation from planned analyses.
· Coordinate completion of, and assist in review of, plausibility checks of results.  Review output associated with quality and process control analyses for inconsistencies.
· Implement small-scale analyses to investigate research hypotheses associated with operational analytic results.
·    Collect, organize, code, transfer, and analyze large data sets from NAEP operational analyses; review operational output and report unusual findings to research staff.  Analyze data using both standard statistical software and NAEP analysis programs.
· Develop understanding of functions of, and expertise in the use of, operational NAEP analysis programs; set up and run these programs as part of research studies.
 

REQUIREMENTS
A Master's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Educational Measurement, or Statistics or a closely related field, with coursework in research methodology is necessary.  Four years of progressively responsible research experience are necessary.

******************************************************************************************MEASUREMENT Statistician Positions

Educational Testing Service has openings for junior to mid-level Measurement Statisticians in the Center for Statistical Analysis, part of the Research & Development Division.  These positions involve directing, planning, and conducting statistical activities for large-scale paper and computer-based testing programs. This includes developing score interpretation materials and testing program publications through the application of statistical methods and indices.  Measurement Statisticians provide statistical programming in support of special analyses related to testing program work and are responsible for score equating using classical test theory or item response theory; performing and interpreting data analyses (e.g., item analyses, reliability analyses, and differential item functioning analyses); and for other statistical and psychometric routines.  Individuals also perform research in innovative assessment techniques and run data analysis routines using statistical software packages.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A JUNIOR LEVEL POSITION
A Ph.D. (or A.B.D. but must anticipate receiving doctoral degree within 6 months of hire) in educational or psychological measurement and statistics, educational psychology or a closely related field is required. Candidates must have at least one year of experience in educational measurement, applied statistics, or teaching.  Experience may be gained through doctoral studies.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MID-LEVEL POSITION
A Ph.D. in educational or psychological measurement and statistics, educational psychology, or a closely related field with at least three years of experience in an applied measurement or statistical analysis environment is required.

Experience or education for both junior and mid-level positions must include applying and interpreting psychometric methods in at least two of the following areas:  item analysis, factor analysis, scaling, equating, standard setting and/or item calibration.  Candidates must also have experience in applying statistical procedures, and their applications; application of classical test theory and item response theory; and use of statistical software packages.
