Kansas State University

Head, Department of Statistics

Kansas State University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Head of the Department of Statistics, starting July 15, 2001. The Statistics Department Head will oversee academic programs and promote research within the department, and represent Statistics to a wide constituency outside the department.

The Department Head is directly responsible to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Since the department is a budgetary unit, the Head is responsible for internal accounting and reporting with regard to personnel, equipment and supplies. Qualifications include a Ph.D. in statistics or a related field, an active research program, and a record of scholarship and teaching sufficient to be tenured at the professor or associate professor level. Administration or service experience, strong interpersonal skills, experience with extramural funding, and an appreciation of the role of both theory and applications in a modern statistics department at a land-grant institution are desirable. The Department of Statistics has 13 full-time faculty positions with research interests covering a wide range of topics in both theory and application. Six faculty members receive partial support from the Kansas State Research and Extension and provide statistical consulting to researchers in many disciplines. The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Currently there are about 40 graduate students, roughly 1/3 of whom are working toward a Ph.D. The majority of graduate students are supported with teaching assistantships. Interested persons should send a letter of application that includes a discussion of qualifications as noted above and a statement of administrative philosophy, a vita, and names of 3-5 references to:
