Position Title:
Assistant Professor
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position beginning August 2014. This position will, in part, support a new undergraduate degree program in Data Science launched in fall 2013 which focuses on “big data” – data mining, modeling, simulation, analytics, data visualization, and machine learning. This transdiciplinary degree program is one of the first undergraduate data science programs in the country and seeks enthusiastic and innovative faculty. The program is housed in the Department of Computer Science, but includes extensive faculty support and coursework from the Departments of Mathematics & Statistics and Business Informatics. Successful candidates are expected to have a research background with a “big data” emphasis and to play a key role in teaching and curriculum development in the new program. As a member of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, candidates are expected to teach undergraduate statistics courses across all levels, establish an interdisciplinary research program with a focus on data science, and meet service obligations. Applications are strongly encouraged from individuals with a demonstrated commitment to one or more of the following: writing and administration of grants, statistical consulting, or engagement in outreach activities. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, has 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, 6 of whom are statisticians. Position Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in statistics is strongly preferred, although a Ph.D. in a closely related field with the equivalent of a master’s degree in statistics is acceptable. Oral and written competency in English is mandatory.
