Dept of Statistics, UNL

Company Information:

Position Title: Post doctoral research associate

Duties & Responsibilities: The purpose of this position is to support research on predictive methods for complex and high dimensional data. The primary tasks are (i) to develop formal ways to assess model uncertainty and (ii) to make inferences from predictors. Secondarily, the position will support ongoing projects computationally that may or may not be primarily predictive. Conduct joint research with supervisor on predictive methods for complex and high dimensional data. The primary tasks are (i) to develop formal assessments of the complexity of predictors and predictor classes and use these to explain the effect of complexity on predictive performance, (ii) to develop formal ways to assess the uncertainty associated with predictor selection as a way to refine predictive performance, (iii) to develop techniques to make modeling inferences from predictors that are not directly physically interpretable, (iv) to develop new methods of prediction for problems where existing methodologies do not apply or perform poorly. Separate from this, the position will provide computational support (mostly Bayesian computing) to conclude ongoing projects that may not be primarily predictive. Initial new work will focus on mapping out a series of problems – theoretical and computational – that can be solved to provide insight about which predictive techniques – existing or novel – work well for different classes of complex problems, with a particular focus on the complexity of predictors and inference after predictor selection. Desirable skills include: Familiarity with complexity concepts (e.g., metric entropy and Shannon entropy), strong mathematical/theoretical skills, and strong computing skills. Expected to work closely with the supervisor to accomplish the research goals, prepare manuscripts for publication in international peer-reviewed journals in statistics, give presentations at conferences and other venues on ongoing work, and prepare competitive grant proposals

Position Qualifications: PhD in Statistics or closely related field; high level of computational skills; strong skills in mathematical statistics.

Salary Range: 60-70k pa depending on qualifications
