The National Biological Threat Characterization Center (NBTCC), a division of the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBTCC), conducts studies and laboratory experiments to fill in information gaps to better understand current and future biological threats, to assess vulnerabilities and conduct risk assessments, and to determine potential impacts to guide the development of countermeasures such as detectors, drugs, vaccines, and decontamination technologies. The Battelle National Biodefense Institute operates the NBACC, an institution that is an element of the Department of Homeland Security.
Position Title:
Principal Investigator, Biostatistics
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Principal Investigator, Biostatistics will provide statistical expertise in support of biological research at the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center. The successful candidate will collaborate with investigators to design studies, develop protocols, write statistical analysis plans, perform statistical analysis, write reports and present results summarizing findings. The candidate will directly contribute to Company success by increasing the strength of study designs and interpretability of results, and by implementing continuous improvement practices in all areas of research that involve statistical analysis of data. Responsibilities include: ● Ensures high-quality statistical support is provided for studies conducted at the NBACC through the use of state-of-the-art statistical methods ● Develops systems for monitoring the quality of data ● Writes sections of protocols that require statistical input, including Statistical Analysis Plans and justifications for study size based upon power calculations ● Reviews protocols to ensure that objectives are met and institutional standards are maintained ● Generates treatment allocations in randomized non-clinical studies and ensures proper implementation ● Maintains expertise in the field of biostatistics, and brings best practices and new methodologies in house ● Writes and validates statistical applications as required ● Generates study reports to be distributed to internal and external stakeholders ● Authors or contributes to reports and/or scientific presentations ● Participates in professional development activities both within and outside the company
Position Qualifications:
● MS or Ph.D. in biostatistics, statistics, applied mathematics or related field, with extensive experience in biostatistics ● At least 2 years experience in application of statistical methods in research including experience in application of design of experiments, power analysis, chi-square tests, and regression analysis in support of experimental design and data analysis. ● Proficiency in statistical software packages such as R, SAS, or S-PLUS ● Proficiency and clarity in both written and oral communications is essential; must be able to clearly and concisely communicate statistical concepts and results to non-statisticians ● Familiarity with basic terminology and methods used in conducting biological research ● Must possess organizational skills and be able to work independently and in a project team environment ● Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently ● Must be a citizen of the United States able to obtain a government Interim Secret clearance leading to an eventual Top Secret clearance as well as meet Suitability requirements of the DHS
