Position Title:
Bioinformatics Senior Research Scientist Position
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Winship Cancer Institute (Winship) of Emory University Biostatistics and Bioinformatics core (a Shared Resource) is seeking to fill a PhD staff position at the level of Research Scientist, Senior in Bioinformatics. We are recruiting for an individual with focus and experience in genomic study design and analysis, especially in the areas of next generation sequence data analysis. We especially welcome applications from candidates with cancer research experience. Responsibilities include collaboration and consultation with Winship investigators, establish and lead research and development initiatives/programs on novel techniques and innovative software that is motivated by cancer applications, lead the development and implementation of analysis workflows for genomic data, including arrays and next generation sequencing, assistance in grant, abstract and manuscript preparation and data analysis. As Georgia’s first and only National Cancer Institute Designated Cancer Center, Winship coordinates a vast array of resources for clinical and basic science cancer research. Winship is a partner in the Georgia Cancer Coalition, an innovative public/private initiative bringing together Georgia’s leading hospitals, universities, biotech firms, civic groups, non-profit and government agencies to treat, prevent and save lives from cancer. This partnership extends the benefits of NCI Cancer Center Designation through initiatives such as the Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education. Emory was named among the top 50 cancer centers in the United States by U.S. News and World Report and received the Blue Cross Blue Shield Designation for Treatment of Rare and Complex Cancers. Winship Biostatistics and Bioinformatics core has 5 full time doctoral members and 4 master level members. Core members collaborate with staff in the Atlanta Clinical and Translational Research Institute, the Clinical Trials core, the School of Medicine Departments of Human Genetics and Biomedical Informatics, the Emory University Center for Comprehensive Informatics, and the Rollins School of Public Health Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. Additional opportunities for cancer collaborations exist within Winship scientific programs: Drug Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics, Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics, Cancer Cell Biology, and Cancer Prevention and Control.
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications. Doctoral degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, biology, biostatistics with a bioinformatics focus, or a related field; strong record of scientific collaborative research; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work in a team environment. Preferred Qualifications. Previous cancer bioinformatics research experience; a demonstrated competence in computer languages such as Perl, SQL, PHP and cig-scripting; two years of research experience and/or postdoctoral training; fluent in analysis of biological pathways, and in relating mutations with drug targets.
