The Colorado School of Public Health is accepting applications and nominations for the position of Department Chair for the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics. This is a 12-month, tenure-track, Associate/Full Professor appointment with the primary academic appointment to be held at the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical Campus. The Colorado School of Public Health (CSPH) is a joint endeavor among the University of Colorado Denver, Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado, and it comprises the Rocky Mountain Region’s first and only accredited school of public health. It opened in July of 2008, and was fully accredited by end of 2010. The collaborative school serves the needs of the public health workforce and the diverse communities in the Rocky Mountain region by connecting public health graduate degree programs at each of the three institutions with distance learning, continuing education, community outreach and public health research. The Colorado School of Public Health (CSPH) draws on the strengths of its three partner universities and has combined resources that include 90 primary faculty, more than 180 adjunct, affiliate, clinical and secondary faculty, 9 core educational programs including MPH, MS and PhD degrees, in several of its five Departments.
Position Title:
Department Chair – Associate Professor/ Professor (Tenure-track faculty) – Biostatistics and Informatics
Duties & Responsibilities:
Nature of Work The CSPH is seeking qualified candidates to Chair the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics (DBI). The department is one of five located within the CSPH. The DBI offers two Graduate degrees (MS and PhD), one Professional degree (MPH in Applied Biostatistics) and one certificate in Public Health Informatics. Other departments within CSPH are: Epidemiology; Health Systems, Management and Policy; Community and Behavioral Health; and Environmental and Occupational Health. The DBI Chair is part of the School’s management and leadership decision-making group comprising the CSPH Dean, four Associate Deans and five Chairmen. The incumbent will be responsible for planning, managing and implementing the academic, service and research programs of the Department. Effective collaborations between its faculty and students, with faculty and researchers in the partner institutions, and with many public and community health research partners in the region will be crucial. Its mission is to provide high quality training in biostatistics, informatics and bioinformatics and to conduct state-of-the-art applied research. The Department constantly aims to develop innovative methodology motivated by real world problems in order to advance public health science, knowledge, practice and outcomes. The Department sees itself as (and is) primarily a collaborative and applied department of biostatistics, with a mission of fostering and expanding the successful research efforts of the School and University. Overall, there is a tremendously strong environment and culture, great respect and appreciation between faculty members, and a well-established and successful tradition of mentoring and growing junior faculty. A successful candidate should be a leader and scholar in any of the related disciplines, who is dedicated to continuing to build and promote strong and effective relationships within an academic health science center. The incumbent should be committed to expanding the department’s academic, research and public health activities in the current competitive environment, while embracing new technology, genetic discoveries and big data applications in medicine and public health. The successful candidate will pursue the development of new and innovative bioinformatics tools for assisting in analyses of enterprise-wide medical data warehouses. The Department Chair is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and assuring the high quality of its academic initiatives, conducting annual reviews of its entire academic faculty, and making recommendations for faculty and staff promotions. He/she will provide recommendations to the CSPH Dean regarding conferral of appropriate graduate degrees on matriculated students, determining membership, and staffing several established committees in the Department and the School. The Department Chair leads and annually updates the department’s five year Strategic Plan and represents the department in financial matters that determine faculty salaries, promotion, teaching, administration, collaborations, and central administration costs. Supervision Exercised The Chair oversees and participates in the evaluation of more than 30 department faculty, as well as, staff serving the department’s academic and research programs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to: 1) Conduct research in a field of Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, or Informatics, and demonstrate a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals 2) Teach and mentor students at the graduate level 3) Guide curriculum and program development 4) Secure grant, contract, and endowment funding 5) Administer an academic enterprise at the department level 6) Foster collegiality and creativity among faculty 7) Manage faculty and staff roles and responsibilities 8) Develop and implement policies for academic programs 9) Represent and advocate for the department within the CSPH, among partner universities, to local and government agencies and to constituent communities.
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications 1) An academic doctorate, or equivalent, in one of several related fields, such as Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, or Informatics 2) An established record of excellence in research, teaching and service 3) Academic and scholarly accomplishments to be eligible for an academic rank of Associate or Full Professor, commensurate with the criteria at the University of Colorado, Colorado School of Public Health. Preferred Qualifications 1) Strong achievement in Biostatistics or Bioinformatics research 2) Experience managing an academic department or unit on a major academic and research Health Sciences Campus, or relevant equivalent experience 3) Experience managing a fee-for-service and collaborative Biostatistical Consulting Laboratory that serves an active biomedical and translational research community 4) Some experiences in working with campus leaders and program to build centralized support facilities to achieve the educational, research and clinical missions of the campus. 5) Management, personnel, finance and budget experiences and skills.
