Position Title:
Director, Office of Planning, Decision Support, and Assessment
Duties & Responsibilities:
South Dakota State University seeks an innovative, high-achieving professional with leadership skills to serve as the first director of the newly created Office of Planning, Decision Support, and Assessment. The director will develop an office with best-of-class capabilities in planning, analytics, performance metrics, decision support, and program and institutional assessment to enable implementation of the university’s strategic plan, IMPACT 2018. Concurrently with the strategic plan, university leaders are moving forward with a new decentralized budget model and LEAN process improvements. The director will build a new, high-performing office to support department, college, unit, and university leaders and decision-makers. As a member of the president’s Executive Team, the director will advise the president, the provost, and the vice presidents on planning, decision support, academic assessment, and institutional research. The Office of Planning, Decision Support and Assessment will: • Develop and implement best practices for institutional research, institutional, program, and academic assessment and accreditation, decision support for university administration and faculty governance bodies, and planning to ensure a high-performing university; • Identify, collect, and analyze data and produce associated reports, to include routine reports and dashboards that enable the campus and general public to monitor program quality and effectiveness and progress in achieving the strategic goals of IMPACT 2018, and custom reports to support major strategic, operational, programmatic, organizational, and financial decisions, including the decentralized budgeting model; • Support LEAN process improvements across the university; • Collaborate with faculty researchers from the analytical sciences on projects of mutual interest, with Information Technology professionals on database system and data mart development, and with a new data stewardship council and the Faculty Budget Planning Committee.
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications Candidates must possess a master’s degree in mathematics, economics, statistics, computational science, business analytics, operations research, informatics, or a related field. Candidates also must have at least five years of experience in one or more of the following: planning, assessment, metrics and analytics, or institutional research in higher education or a higher education-affiliated entity. The position requires skills in project management, organizational development, team-building, leadership, problem-solving, and written and oral communication. Preferred Qualifications The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. or ten years of experience in the areas described above, demonstrated knowledge of, and success within the context of, a research-intensive university as well as first hand-experiences with decentralized budgeting and LEAN processes; evidence of achievement in timely, accurate, high-quality research and decision support; the ability to proactively respond to emerging data and analytical needs; and a strong track record of success in working effectively with faculty, administrators, and other constituent groups.
Salary Range:
Salary for the preferred candidate will be based upon the market, qualifications, and experience.
