The George Institute for Global Health (TGI) is a not-for-profit health
research institute, accredited by the National Health and Medical
Research Council of Australia. Our mission is to improve the health of
millions of people worldwide by providing the best research evidence to
guide global health decisions and by engaging with decision makers to
enact change. We focus our efforts in Australia, Asia and the
developing world where we work with populations in which there is
disadvantage and inequity. We lead large-scale priority-driven research
projects that build regional capacity and we strengthen health systems
to improve control of common serious diseases and injuries. TGI has 3
major operating groups: Research and Development; Infrastructure and
Resources; and the George Clinical. These groups comprise numerous
divisions, programs and units that oversee the conduct of a range of
large-scale international and regional projects funded by a diverse
group of sponsors, both public and private. TGI currently employs
around 250 staff in its offices in Sydney, Beijing, Hyderabad and
London, and regularly hosts visiting scholars from many countries.
Clinical research trials and operations are conducted at approximately
400 centres in more than 30 countries worldwide. While Asia is a major
focus, TGI is also active throughout Europe, North America, and
Australasia. TGI has offices in Sydney, Hyderabad, London and Beijing.
TGI also provides strategic consulting and operational services to
external clients in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. In
2009, The George Institute, China, in collaboration with 11
international, national and regional universities and research
institutions including Duke University, the University of Sydney,
Imperial College of London and Peking University, won a prestigious and
significant 5-year award from the UnitedHealth Group – one of the
largest health and wellness company in the world - and National Heart,
Lung and Blood Institute (US National Institutes of Health) to
establish a center of excellence in prevention and control of chronic
disease in China. The mission of the Center is to develop, implement
and evaluate novel strategies for the treatment and prevention of the
chief causes of ill health in China through a programme of targeted
healthcare initiatives, capacity building and policy engagement. The
work to be undertaken will provide an evidence-base by which the Center
can directly advocate for the implementation of more appropriate,
effective and efficient health policy for the control of chronic
diseases in hundreds of millions of the least well off Chinese. . The
Institute is committed to build up research capacity of our research
fellows through a number of initiatives such as journal club and
training workshops and a cultural emphasis on learning and development
throughout the whole organization. Position Title:
Research Fellow
Duties & Responsibilities:
Role Purpose The Research Fellow will have responsibility for economic
evaluation of current and new studies, evidence synthesis, economic
modelling studies, and health outcomes research, all linked to
informing health care and policy decision making. There will also be
the opportunity for the Research Fellow to be involved with other
research and activities conducted in the R&D Division, The George
Institute for Global Health, China. There is potential for this role to
grow into a leader in economic evaluations of healthcare programs in
China. Key Objectives of the Role (With a focus on economic
evaluations) • Have a key role in the research development,
implementation, and dissemination of relevant current or new studies •
Co-ordinate and manage preparation and submission of publications. •
Analyse data and prepare manuscripts that are suitable for publication
• Assist with the preparation of grant applications as required •
Ensure that research being conducted is congruent with world best
practice in research • Development of project protocol, procedures
manual, data collection tools and data quality plans with input and
support of other staff • Organise training and other meetings re data
collection and conduct of relevant projects • Ensure data preservation,
backup and associated tasks are achieved • Make field trips within
China when necessary • Participate in team meetings and activities. •
Participate in objective setting, performance management, review of the
position and the planning and implementation of personal and career
development activities.
Position Qualifications:
• Master’s or higher degree in health economics, economics, statistics,
biostatistics, or related area, or other relevant postgraduate
qualification. • Clinical background in health care (such as
cardiology, neurology, diabetes, and nephrology) with post-graduate
qualifications preferred • Advanced technical writing and oral
presentation skills in English • Bilingual (Mandarin/English) with
excellent communication (written and verbal) skills • Experience in
preparing grant applications and/or manuscripts • Solid understanding
of research and related ethical principles in the conduct of research •
Previous experience in managing and supporting collaborative projects
amongst a multidisciplinary team • Ability to perform advanced health
economic analyses • Ability to work effectively in a small team
environment • Can function independently while knowing own limitations
and when referral of issues to supervisor is required • Motivated and
able to work independently and unsupervised, ability to work on own
initiative • Results oriented and able to deliver on time • Well
organised and with good time management • Attention to detail and
rigorous methodological approach • Flexibility and willingness to
travel to meet with project staff and work as required to meet
timelines • Flexibility and the ability to work effectively in an
ambiguous and continually changing environment • Competence with
computer programs (especially MS Office; MS Word, MS Excel) and
electronic communication (email and internet).
