About Us: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home of three Nobel
laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated
to the development and advancement of biomedical research to eliminate
cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. Recognized internationally
for its pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation, the Center’s
five scientific divisions collaborate to form a unique environment for
conducting basic and applied science. The Hutchinson Center, in
collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University
of Washington and Seattle Children’s, is the only National Cancer
Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific
Northwest. Join us and make a difference! About the Department: The WHI
is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
It launched in 1992 to examine risk factors and test prevention
strategies for the major causes of morbidity and mortality in
post-menopausal women. Over 90,000 participants remain in active
follow-up conducted primarily by mailed questionnaires and medical
record review. The CCC is responsible for: the annual follow-up
mailings; maintaining the WHI database and biorepository; supporting
the WHI Regional Centers in medical records collection; supporting
medical records review; developing and implementing linkages to
national databases, data analysis and reporting; design and
implementation of ancillary studies; and overall coordination of a
geographically diverse, multidisciplinary group of investigators in
their use of the WHI resource. The CCC provides leadership to the study
as a whole and participates in and provides administrative support for
all of the operational committees. The specific aims of the CCC during
its current five-year extension (2011-2016) contract include: •
Maximizing the knowledge gained from the WHI resource by conducting
studies addressing the etiology, biologic mechanisms and risk factors
for causes of morbibidy and mortality in postmenopausal women, as well
as those that correlate with healthy and exceptional aging; • Expanding
the WHI resource longitudinally through longer-term follow-up of
consenting participants and collection of additional data via linkage
mechanism with external data sources such as the National Death Index
(NDI) and the Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS); • Providing
a service infrastructure to support the WHI committee structure in the
conduct of the study and to support both WHI and non-WHI investigators
in their initiatives to use these resources to pursue additional
scientific initiatives. Investigators in the WHI have recently been
notified of new funding from the National Cancer Institute to develop a
Cancer Survivorship Cohort within the WHI. This project will involve
new data collection from women with a cancer diagnosis regarding their
cancer treatment and outcomes and development of a fixed tumor tissue
repository. The project director position offers the successful
candidate an excellent opportunity to participate fully in the
scientific and operational aspects of the WHI CCC.
