Position Title: Associate Research Fellow / Research Fellow

Duties & Responsibilities: The National Institute for Applied Statistics Research Australia (NIASRA) is a newly formed entity within the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics and is rapidly building a reputation in the field of statistics applied to surveys, environmental, biological and agricultural sciences. Its research involves developing and applying innovative statistical methods in areas such as environmental informatics, survey methodology, bioinformatics and biometrics. There are currently 20 staff members who work in statistics, and over 20 research students. NIASRA has four research Professors and extensive links with Australian and international research organisations: Professor Noel Cressie is among Thomson Reuters ISI’s elite group of Highly Cited mathematical scientists; Professor Ray Chambers is funded by the Australian Bureau of Statistics; Professor Brian Cullis is funded by the Grains Research Development Corporation (GRDC) and Plant Industries, CSIRO; Prof David Steel is the Director of NIASRA. NIASRA has three connected major research themes: Environmental Informatics (led by Prof Cressie), Survey Methodology (led by Prof Chambers), and Biometrics and Bioinformatics (led by Prof Cullis) and also undertakes research in Statistical Education and Financial Mathematics. NIASRA is seeking to appoint two motivated applied statisticians to provide high level input into a range of collaborative genomic research projects with the CSIRO Food Futures Flagship and the GRDC molecular marker programs. You will have the opportunity to undertake methodological research motivated by problems arising in the collaborative projects or within the scope and aims of aims of one of the four key centres of NIASRA (namely the Centre for Biometry and Bioinformatics). You will also work with the team of statisticians in the GRDC funded national project: “Statistics for the Australian Grains Industry”. You will be encouraged to attract additional industry based projects which are relevant to the GRDC.

Position Qualifications:

Salary Range: $68,772 - $100,628
