The University of Memphis School of Public Health offers areas of study in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, social and behavioral sciences, health systems, and health administration. Faculty expertise is diverse and the School has strong collaborations with local, national, and international partners that enrich teaching, support research projects, and offer opportunities for graduate placements and research experience. The School’s mission involves the translation of knowledge and research into community practice to tackle pressing societal problems of social and environmental justice, health disparities, unhealthy lifestyles, and accessible systems that support healthy living for individuals, families, and communities. The School emphasizes both discovery and application, with the goal of moving "knowledge into action" locally, nationally and globally. The University of Memphis is a comprehensive urban university and is classified as a Carnegie Doctoral Research Extensive public institution. There are six colleges and four professional schools, enrolling approximately 20,000 students, of whom 4,300 are in graduate programs. Opportunities exist for collaboration with various University research centers including the FedEx Institute of Technology, W. Harry Feinstone Center for Genomic Research, Methodist Le Bonheur Center for Healthcare Economics, Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change, the Center for Partnership in GIS, and the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy. The Memphis Research Consortium (http://www.memphisresearchconsortium.org), a state funded inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional collaborative effort, offers the opportunity for supporting research within the areas of childhood obesity, informatics, and systems modeling to address key areas of focus in children's health improvement, clinical and behavioral informatics, and public health genomics. Collaborative agreements allow for cross-institutional work with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and partnerships with Baptist Memorial Health Care, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, and other community health clinics and systems.
