Position Title:
Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) in Statistics
Duties & Responsibilities:
The faculty member is expected to supervise graduate students on their master's theses and consulting projects in the department's MS Statistics program, which has been approved as a Professional Science Master's degree. The faculty member would also be expected to supervise student teams working on industrial research projects and consulting projects in the department's Center for Applied Math, Computation, and Statistics (CAMCOS) program. In addition the faculty member is expected to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate statistics courses in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, to maintain a program of scholarly activity, to work on curriculum development, and be involved in departmental governance. Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
Position Qualifications:
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at San José State University invites applications for one full time tenure-track faculty position in Big Data/Statistics at the rank of assistant professor. Candidates must have a Doctoral degree in Statistics or a closely related field by July 2014. We seek applicants with experience analyzing large data sets and making appropriate use of technology in teaching and research. Experience using Hadoop, Python, and SQL would also be desirable.
