The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a non-profit federally funded research and development center think tank. IDA provides answers to questions posed by the Department of Defense and other agencies that require careful analysis. Research Assistants (RA) are members of our full-time professional staff. RAs typically work as members of study teams and at the direction of senior study leaders and analysts.
Position Title:
Research Assistant - Cost Analysis & Research
Duties & Responsibilities:
RAs will generally perform fact-finding tasks; develop preliminary analyses, and shape findings and recommendations for the team. RAs are expected to be familiar with standard information collection, compilation, summary and analysis methods; able to develop or apply appropriate methods to support needs of particular studies or analyses; must demonstrate strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute effectively to a team approach to problem solving; • Participate in developing and maintaining information sources and contacts as directed; may attend meetings to collect information related to projects. • Research topics independently, compile data, and present information both orally and in writing. • Contribute to the creation/writing of task report(s) or paper(s). • Required to interact with Governmental or industrial representatives. • There are no direct supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.
Position Qualifications:
• Recent (within the last 2 years) Bachelors Degree, preferably in economics, the natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, or statistics. • Backgrounds in quantitative, econometric, statistical, or computational methods are a plus. • Demonstrated ability to assemble and organize large, complex data sets for subsequent quantitative analyses is essential; experience programming and using engineering or statistical analysis software applications (such as MATLAB, Mathematica, MINITAB, SAS and STATA) is a plus • Successful candidates need to exhibit strong analytical and communication skills, a capacity for independent thought and sound judgment. Individuals selected for employment at IDA are subject to a security investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. • Candidates are required to submit a copy of their transcripts and a cover letter outlining how their skill set, experiences, and education align with the defined responsibilities.
