Position Title: Postdoctoral position. Review and design of sampling methods for threatened fish population.

Duties & Responsibilities: We request applications for a postdoctoral position to work on a project towards reviewing current and historic methods and data for sampling delta smelt in the Bay Delta. The successful applicant will work closely with a biostatistician and the Bay Delta scientific community to review and assess all data-generating processes, sampling designs and goals, data quality. The position requires a person with excellent statistical skills, particularly in sampling designs and statistical modeling of populations with spatio-temporal continuity and age structure. The successful applicant will have to devote a significant amount of time interviewing scientists and collecting information about sampling goals and methods. Excellent interpersonal skills will be necessary and statistical consulting experience is a plus. Salary: The actual title and level for this position will be determined depending on the highest degree, experience and qualifications of the successful applicant. Position carries full benefits at the University of California. Position is available immediately and will be open until a suitable candidate is found. We expect to hire somebody by December 2012, but inquiries after that date are welcome. Duration of position is 2 years depending on title selected, and might be extended depending on performance and availability of funding. Successful applicant will need to travel for day field visits and meetings in California. Other overnight travel will be necessary to attend national and international meetings. Tasks include: 1. Survey and document monitoring, sampling and data/information management systems; 2. Assess research questions and goals and evaluate sampling methods and designs; 3. Organize and conduct workshops towards learning more about methods used by various institutions and agencies to sample delta smelt; 4. Constructively evaluate sampling methods and propose improvements as necessary; 5. Prepare reports and manuscripts for publication in refereed journals.

Position Qualifications: 1. Graduate degree or equivalent experience in science; 2. Strong quantitative and statistical skills at the level of professional biostatistician; 3. Excellent communication skills in English; 4. Experience writing reports or manuscripts; 5. Experience in fish population sampling and modeling is highly desirable; 6. Basic data management skills, with knowledge of database management systems being a plus but not strictly required; 7. Ability and willingness to learn new things quickly. We envision that this position would be perfect for graduates of statistics, biometry, population biology, ecology, wildlife biology, biology, and related fields. that have affinity for statistics and design of experiments and sampling protocols. Graduates in statistics, computer science and mathematics with an interest in applications in the life sciences are encouraged to apply. We are looking for a person with a good analytical and open mind, who can communicate well and work in a team in a collaborative manner.

Salary Range: 40,000-50,000 depending on experience and qualifications
