Company Information: The Department: The Department of Mathematics & Statistics currently has 22 tenure-track faculty, 12 full time instructors, 60 graduate students, and 150 undergraduate majors. The department currently offers a B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics, an M.S. in Statistics, and a Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics. University/Community: South Dakota State University is a land-grant institution and is the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of 12,500 students. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of 22,000 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, with a metropolitan area population of 227,000.

Position Title: Assistant Professor of Statistics

Duties & Responsibilities: Position Description: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is announcing two nine-month tenure track faculty positions in statistics. The ideal candidate will complement current statistics faculty research areas, which include Bayesian inference, statistical learning theory, pattern recognition, and longitudinal data analysis with applications in forensics, bioinformatics, and predictive analytics. Applicants should have a strong interest in helping expand the application of their specialty discipline in the regional private and public sectors. These individuals will become integral members of a diversified and active team of mathematics and statistics faculty supporting the Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics, the Master’s degree in Statistics, and the Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics Responsibilities: Teaching and advising in the undergraduate and graduate programs, research, service, and outreach to the campus and region. One of the two positions will be research intensive, with a teaching load of two or three courses per year. The other position will be teaching intensive, with a heavier teaching load of six courses per year and correspondingly reduced research expectations.

Position Qualifications: Required qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in Statistics or closely related field with specialty in one or more of the areas of Bayesian Inference, Statistical Learning Theory, Pattern Recognition, Longitudinal Data Analysis, Forecasting, or Bioinformatics, demonstrated effective teaching abilities, demonstrated effective research abilities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills. Additional desired qualifications include demonstrated experience in obtaining external funding, demonstrated experience in collaborating with private sector organizations, demonstrated experience supervising student practicum experiences and internships, and demonstrated experience directing undergraduate research.
