California State University, Bakersfield, founded in 1970, is one of twenty-three campuses of the CSU System and currently has an enrollment of 7,000 students. The University services a socially and ethnically diverse population of 560,000 in an area of 10,000 square miles. The city of Bakersfield (population over 300,000) is located in the southern San Joaquin Valley and has a much lower cost of living than coastal California. Los Angeles, the Pacific Ocean, Mojave Desert, and Sierra Nevada Mountains are all within a two-hour drive from campus. The Department of Mathematics currently consists of sixteen full-time faculty including three lecturers. The department offers a BS degree in Mathematics with the following concentrations: Applied, Economics, Statistics, Teaching and Theoretical, as well as, service courses for non-majors.
Position Title:
Assistant or Associate Professor
Duties & Responsibilities:
Applications are invited for a tenure-track position in APPLIED MATHEMATICS and/or STATISTICS at the assistant or associate professor level, beginning September 1, 2013. The teaching load is 2-3 5-unit courses per quarter, with seven/year maximum. Almost all courses in the Department of Mathematics include an activity/problem solving session. Assigned time for research and proposal preparation is available during the first three years of appointment, and subsequently on a competitive basis. It is expected the successful candidate will develop a research agenda and maintain a publication record.
Position Qualifications:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics and must demonstrate evidence of excellent teaching and research potential. All areas in applied mathematics and/or statistical research will be considered. The candidate must demonstrate an interest in teaching a broad range of applied mathematics and/or statistics courses to a diverse body of students and engage undergraduates in research. Interdisciplinary collaboration with other faculty in the School is expected.
