The Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (B&B) at Duke University is conducting a search for candidates for a faculty position to serve as the Director of Biostatistics in the Duke Clinical Research Institute. B&B is an integral component of one of the nation's foremost medical research enterprises. The department currently has 49 faculty members collaborating closely with both clinical and basic science investigators. Duke University is located in Durham, North Carolina.

Duties & Responsibilities:
OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY The Director of Biostatistics (DB) is a senior faculty member of the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (B&B) and a key member of the senior leadership of Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI). The DB works in partnership with the DCRI Director and senior scientific leaders and administrative staff to achieve the overall goals of the DCRI. The DB also interacts as necessary with scientific, statistical, regulatory and administrative staff at the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and devise industry in the design, implementation and analysis of DCRI studies. WORK PERFORMED Personnel Management The DB will be responsible for biostatistics and bioinformatics activities at the DCRI, including faculty in the B&B Department and within the DCRI and will ensure adequate and appropriate faculty effort assignment. A priority of this role will be to plan for faculty biostatistical support that is needed by each key research program (KRP) within the DCRI and aid in its implementation throughout the DCRI clinical research groups. The DB will help designate a mentor for new B&B faculty members working in the DCRI and will ensure appropriate training. The DB will be responsible for ensuring continuity of biostatistics and bioinformatics effort on projects when original statistical faculty is/are unavailable, for example during family leave, disability, or after resignations. The DB will provide support and serve as a resource to biostatistics and bioinformatics faculty regarding career interests and individual development plans (IDPs) and will provide ongoing coaching and feedback to assist them in identifying development opportunities and in refining and enhancing their skills. The DB will facilitate efforts to promote, develop, implement, and refine continuing education and training programs. Supporting and Assisting DCRI Director and Executive Team As a member of the Executive Team of the DCRI, the DB will participate in the strategic planning of scientific research in the DCRI and will report to both the Director of the DCRI and the chair of the B&B Department. The DB will be responsible for the integration of biostatistics and bioinformatics activities with the other aspects of clinical and basic research at the DCRI and, in particular, will work to ensure seamless integration of information technology functions with biostatistics and bioinformatics functions. The DB will participate in strategic discussions and decisions regarding aspects of DCRI research that relate to biostatistics and bioinformatics, such as specimen banking, data management, and medical informatics. The DB will be responsible for assessing the biostatistics and bioinformatics needs and feasibility as decisions are made for the DCRI to undertake major initiatives or expand into new areas. The DB will serve as a liaison between the DCRI leadership and the DCRI biostatisticians and bioinformaticians. The DB will be the Faculty leader for communications to ensure that statistical issues are represented. The DB will provide statistically sound scientific guidance to peers, collaborators, and senior management, within both the DCRI and the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. Faculty and Functional Group Relations The DB will develop strong working relationships with all DCRI clinical and biostatistics faculty and with all functional groups and KRPs. The DB will serve as the primary contact and point person for DCRI Biostatistics faculty and B&B faculty who wish to submit a grant application for multi-center clinical research studies and will evaluate the feasibility of these new grant opportunities and advise faculty as appropriate. The DB, in collaboration with the administrative director, will engage in business development activities and help promote the DCRI and identifying and pursuing potential new business that meet faculty interests. DCRI Research Activities The DB will help promote methodological research that addresses DCRI biostatistics and bioinformatics issues in order to enhance DCRI visibility in this area, and to develop greater name recognition on grant and manuscript reviews. The DB will serve as a liaison between the DCRI and the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. The DB will collaborate on specific DCRI research projects as required.
Position Qualifications:
A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in biostatistics, statistics, or bioinformatics is required. Prior clinical trials experience, both government and industry, and relevant management experience are also required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to collaborate effectively with non-statisticians are essential.
