Medical College of Wisconsin

Company Information: The Medical College of Wisconsin is a major national research center. We are the largest research institution in the Milwaukee metro area and 2nd largest in Wisconsin. The Medical College’s research enterprise is focused on strategic, prioritized areas of research involving interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists and physicians with the goal of rapidly translating discoveries into advances for patient care.

Position Title: Post-doctoral fellow

Duties & Responsibilities: We are seeking a post-doctoral fellow whose principal duties will be to run statistical analysis of genetic data arising from a study of diabetes on a population of outbred rats. Our laboratory uses heterogeneous stock (HS) rats (animals that are outbred from eight inbred strains) and sophisticated statistical genetics methods to find regions of the genome that affect outcomes related to diabetes (eg, those harboring genes affecting glucose tolerance and/or insulin secretion or sensitivity; see Solberg Woods et al., 2010, and http://www.scivee.tv/node/16585). These analyses are followed by DNA sequencing and gene expression experiments that provide further information to help identify underlying causative genes. This NIH-funded position comprises use of statistical analyses and software developed specifically for use in highly recombinant animal populations such as the HS (see Valdar et al., 2009). The applicant will join a young and growing laboratory that will provide a collegial and supportive environment. The laboratory is based at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee (web-site below) with collaborations at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (see http://valdarlab.unc.edu/).

Position Qualifications: The successful applicant should have relevant scientific education (PhD degree or similar), an interest in quantitative/computational biology and good written and oral communication skills. A strong background in statistics and programming experience will be an advantage.
