Company Information: Commenced in August 2012 the School of Population Health will consolidate and advance the University of South Australia’s capacity for training research professionals in the analysis of complex population-level data to inform health and social policy. The School will conduct teaching in areas including population health, social epidemiology, public health, health promotion and health economics and will implement an accredited Masters of Public Health degree. The School will also evolve a novel doctoral training program combining rigorous training in population health methodology with original research on contemporary health challenges which face mainstream as well as vulnerable populations including Aboriginal and other disadvantaged peoples, in national and international settings.

Position Title: Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer

Duties & Responsibilities: 1. Conduct nationally and internationally recognised research supported by high-quality publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences and other research forums. 2. Increase research leadership and performance in the School and Division by fostering high-quality, and high-impact research. This includes building and mentoring an effective research team including early career researchers. 3. Prepare and submit external refereed research grant proposals to sustain research primarily through Category 1 research funding. 4. Provide leadership and mentoring to school-based faculty, including staff development in the supervision and examination of postgraduate students. 5. Supervise higher-degree research candidatures, and provide academic counselling and advice to research students. 6. Initiate, develop and deliver methodological and substantive courses as appropriate. Provide leadership in promoting scholarship and integrity in teaching and learning initiatives to enhance the student experience and support a culture of teaching and learning excellence in population health research and practice. 7. Identify, attract and develop quality higher-degree research students to enhance the future of population health. This includes marketing and promotion of the field to potential undergraduate and postgraduate students. 8. Initiate, foster and enhance national and international links and strategic collaborative relationships with relevant research institutions, universities and community bodies that assist in the advancement of the University, Division and School objectives. 9. Advise and support the Head of School and the Associate Head: School/Research Degrees Co-ordinator on innovation and good practice in research, and support the development of the School by participation in strategic initiatives. 10. Communicate research findings at relevant national and international opportunities, for example at conferences, universities and other related bodies to the role. The responsibilities as specified above may be altered in accordance with the changing requirements of the position.

Position Qualifications: 1. A research doctorate in epidemiology or biostatistics, otherwise applied social statistics, demography, or social measurement and psychometrics, focussing on population or public health topics. 2. Evidence of successful completion of advanced, full-term/semester-based postgraduate coursework in research methods including advanced statistical analysis, either the context of, or consequent to, doctoral training. 3. Experience with longitudinal analysis and/or multi-level or analysis of clustered observations. 4. A clear record of strong national achievement, extending to international achievement in a field within or related to population health, substantiated by excellence in research and teaching or postgraduate supervision. 5. Experience in higher education teaching and learning environment, applying problem-based learning approaches. 6. An established record of research and scholarly activity, independently and as part of a team, as evidenced by the ability to attract nationally or internationally competitive grants as well as significant research outputs including national and international publications in peer-reviewed journals. 7. Experience in leadership and the conduct of population-based health/social research, including the implementation and monitoring of research and data collection protocols, ethics or institutional review board submissions, and study co-ordination including budget monitoring and stakeholder reporting and communications. 8. Demonstrated high level interpersonal skills, ability to function well in a multidisciplinary environment, and ability to develop networks and strategic relationships, professional and community partnerships, and effective relationships with students and staff to build capacity.

Salary Range: Total Remuneration $93K - $151K per annum depending on level of appointment. (The total remuneration range includes salary, employer super contributions of up to 17% salary and annual leave loading).
