Position Title: Epidemiologist/Statistician

Duties & Responsibilities: Duties: This position is responsible for performing data management, analysis, and reporting of data from statewide population-based health surveys, particularly the Montana Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS); managing complex datasets to monitor trends in risk factors, disease, and health outcomes; and performing advanced statistical tests to produce topical analytical reports focusing on specific public health issues and assist the BRFSS program director in overall management of the program, including survey methodology, design, and information dissemination related to grant activities. Position Qualifications: Knowledge of the concepts and theories of surveillance, epidemiology, statistics, and public health practice, including risk factors associated with specific conditions; computers and database management including Excel or Access; the use of statistical software such as SAS or SPSS; statistical analysis and interpretation; research design and survey methodology; advance research and evaluation methods and techniques related to epidemiological assessments; and presentation of data and methods and techniques for reporting statistical information. Skill in oral and written communication; designing and conducting surveillance and epidemiologic studies; determining demographic, medically relevant information and risk factor data; interpreting and analyzing the significance of medical, health, and other data obtained from a variety of sources; determining the validity, reliability, and applicability of health indicators; and the appropriate application of statistics procedures and tests; computer related software, including statistical packages, database applications, word-processing, and spreadsheet applications and applied surveillance and epidemiology.Ability to communicate effectively and provide timely and concise information to others; listen effectively; actively seek constructive feedback; make difficult decisions; use reason and logic to identify and solve problems; communicate effectively for report writing and presentations that summarize and present health data and related information. Education/Experience: Master’s degree in statistics, epidemiology, statistics, life sciences, or social sciences with major with major coursework in statistics or epidemiology AND three years of experience or training (including internships or research assistantships) in health surveillance and research. Other equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
