Company Information: IDA is a not-for-profit organization operating three think tanks supporting federal decision making: two serving the Department of Defense and one serving the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President. Position Title: Research Associate: Statistician

Duties & Responsibilities: Overview: The IDA Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI), located in Washington, DC, is a non-profit, federally funded research and development center that provides analytical support to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the federal agencies on science and technology (S&T) policy. STPI takes pride in the high caliber and timeliness of its analyses, which are produced in an atmosphere that encourages independent thinking to achieve objective results. Work at STPI often involves multi-disciplinary approaches to research in diverse teams. Strong oral and written communications skills are essential, as STPI staff work closely and regularly interact with government sponsors. We work across all areas of science and technology, including economics and statistics, biology and life sciences, federal resource management, nanotechnology, engineering, and national security, and space, among others. Recent examples of S&T policy work include research on programs that fund high risk projects, identifies gaps in behavioral and social science research, focuses on multiple aspects of the federal labs (facilities, governance, technology transfer), the bioeconomy, research and development in the industrial sector, STEM education, Earth observation systems, and Federal data policies. Responsibilities: We are looking for candidates with a master’s degree in statistics to provide data analysis and data management support for projects relating to S&T policy for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and other Federal Agencies.

Position Qualifications: Strong scientific, analytic, and technical skills are required, as well as the ability to speak and write clearly, think analytically, and work independently. Candidates must have: Master’s degree in statistics by December 2012 Strong computational skills; prefer candidates with expertise in SAS, R, and/or a scripting language (e.g., Python, Perl, Ruby) Demonstrated ability in applied statistical work; prefer candidates with previous consulting experience and knowledge of data management, linear models, design of experiments, data mining, data visualization, and/or survey methods.
