FDA, CDRH, OSEL, Division of Imaging and Applied Mathematics

Company Information: The Division of Imaging and Applied Mathematics (DIAM) participates in the Center's mission by conducting research, participating in device review activities, developing consensus standards both domestic and international, developing regulatory guidance, and providing educational programs in the area of medical imaging and applied mathematics. Specifically, DIAM provides scientific expertise and carries out a program of applied research in support of CDRH regulation of radiation-emitting products, medical imaging systems, and other devices utilizing computer-assisted diagnostic technologies. Medical imaging research encompasses ionizing and non-ionizing radiation from data capture through image display and observer performance. The computer-assisted diagnostics work of DIAM is focused on the appropriate mathematical evaluation methodologies for sophisticated computational algorithms used to aid medical practitioners interpret diagnostic device results. The Division is charged with developing and disseminating performance assessment methodology appropriate to these modalities.

Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow: diagnostic study design and analysis

Duties & Responsibilities: The successful applicant will work closely with a multidisciplinary medical imaging research group (engineers, physicists, and clinicians) on the evaluation of imaging technologies and multi-dimensional classifiers (based on images or biomarkers). The successful applicant will become conversant with the device-approval process in CDRH (ODE and OIVD) through training opportunities and exposure to device submissions and the regulatory process. There are also opportunities to engage in other projects in the lab involving x-ray, CT, ultrasound, MRI, digital pathology, imaging phantom development, display evaluation, and image analysis with state-of-the art experimental and computational facilities.

Position Qualifications: The position will be at the Ph.D. level with an academic and research background in applied mathematics, statistics, or imaging physics. We are looking for a candidate with training in the evaluation of diagnostic performance (ROC, agreement, concordance, risk, hazard ratios, and survival curves) and interests in computational modeling and analysis.

Salary Range: $74,000-89,000

Benefits: Unfortunately the mechanism for this position doesn't allow for any benefits. The position is funded for two years, with potential for renewal or conversion to a permanent position based on the availability of funds, productivity of the individual, and the needs of the agency.
