The Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Emory University has grown rapidly in recent years. The faculty maintains active research programs in spatial statistics, bioinformatics, imaging, models for missing and mismeasured data, and multivariate survival models, with applications to health preparedness, genetics, mental health, infectious diseases, cancer, and renal diseases. The department currently has 25 doctoral faculty, 5 jointly appointed faculty members, 9 associate faculty members, 1 emerita faculty, and 18 adjunct faculty. The department participates in the Atlanta Clinical and Translational Research Institute, serves as the Data Coordinating Center for several NIH clinical trials, and operates the Biostatistics Consulting Center. The department houses the Center for Biomedical Imaging Statistics with links to imaging research across the health sciences. The department offers a doctoral graduate program in biostatistics from the Laney Graduate School of Arts and Science and masters degrees in public health and public health informatics. A concentration in bioinformatics is available at the doctoral level. Winship Biostatistics and Bioinformatics core has 4 full time doctoral faculty and 2 masters level members, with active recruitments for additional positions ongoing. Core staff collaborate with members of the Atlanta Clinical and Translational Research Institute, Winship Cancer Genomics core, the Clinical Trials core, the School of Medicine Biomedical Informatics Department, and the Emory University Center for Comprehensive Informatics. Additional opportunities for collaboration with faculty from the RSPH and School of Medicine exist within Winship scientific programs: Drug Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics, Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics, Cancer Cell Biology, and Cancer Prevention and Control. As Georgia’s first and only National Cancer Institute Designated Cancer Center, Winship coordinates a vast array of resources for clinical and basic science cancer research. Winship is a partner in the Georgia Cancer Coalition, an innovative public/private initiative bringing together Georgia’s leading hospitals, universities, biotech firms, civic groups, non-profit and government agencies to treat, prevent and save lives from cancer. This partnership extends the benefits of NCI Cancer Center Designation through initiatives such as the Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education. Emory was named among the top 50 cancer centers in the United States by U.S. News and World Report and received the Blue Cross Blue Shield Designation for Treatment of Rare and Complex Cancers.
