The National Library of Medicine is recruiting a Biostatistician to work in one of its research and development divisions, the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications. The Lister Hill Center (LHC), which is part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, conducts research and development in such broad fields as clinical informatics, natural language and image processing, and clinical data coding standards.

JOB DUTIES:

The successful candidate will collaborate with LHC physicians, scientists and engineers in the design and analysis of innovative research and evaluation projects including exploring relationships between selected events and outcomes in large clinical databases, developing statistical interfaces to such databases, and formally comparing the performance of new technologies with old systems.

Current LHC initiatives include: processing natural language, knowledge and images; developing and testing automated systems to tag and redact personally identifiable information in free text, developing and testing the utility of electronic medical record systems (including NLM’s personal health record), and refining and encouraging the use of international clinical vocabularies and coding standards to support interoperability and clinical information exchange.

The biostatistician is also expected to promote the use of effective experimental designs and­­ appropriate tools within LHC research projects through education and collaboration, and to advise the ClinicalTrials.gov project regarding issues related to submissions of clinical trials results into their database.


QUALIFICATIONS:

We are looking for applicants with doctoral degrees in statistics or biostatistics with strong academic training in methodology, in addition to technical skills and experience in applications. Interest or experience with R is desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as effective interpersonal skills are also essential.

Salary for this position is commensurate with research experience. Candidates appointed through the excepted service under the Title 42 authority need not be U.S. citizens. The successful candidate will be working with Dr. Clem McDonald, Director of the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications. These positions are subject to a background investigation.
