Position Title: Tenure-Track Biostatistician (open-rank)

Duties & Responsibilities: The West Virginia University (WVU) Department of Community Medicine is undergoing a major expansion and plans, with its partners, to apply for School of Public Health status. We seek applicants for full-time tenure-track faculty positions (open rank) in biostatistics, to join an active, growing group of clinical translational, population, health services, and community intervention researchers. This position will be part of the emerging Department of Biostatistics, but it will also augment the goals of our Clinical and Translational Research Institute. The Department of Community Medicine is located within the School of Medicine at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, in Morgantown, West Virginia. Candidates should have a record of, or significant promise for, excellence in research and teaching in biostatistics, as well as peer-reviewed publications. Biostatisticians are expected to participate in NIH or comparable competitive extramural funding at the co-investigator level. General consulting and collaborating across the Health Sciences Center will be a vital component of this position. Expertise in all areas of statistics is welcome; practical experience in the design and analysis of clinical trials is especially desired. Graduate teaching and mentorship is expected, and excellent communication skills are needed. The Department of Community Medicine has several national research programs, including federally funded centers, a thriving, CEPH-accredited MPH program, and a new PhD program in Public Health Sciences with two tracks: Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Population Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The emerging Department of Biostatistics is developing an MPH in biostatistics, to be started in fall 2012, with long-term goals of developing MS and PhD degree programs in biostatistics. The Department of Biostatistics has recently developed a “Biostatistics Consulting Group” (http://www.hsc.wvu.edu/bcg) to provide formalized biostatistical consulting across the Health Sciences Center.

Position Qualifications: Applicants for this position should possess a terminal degree and have academic preparation/expertise in biostatistics. An interest in broader implications of research as it relates to biology, policy, and practice is a competitive advantage. Candidates should be able to collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams of basic, clinical, and applied researchers. The Department of Community Medicine has close ties with multiple research centers and institutes including the CDC-funded Injury Control Research Center, a CDC-funded Prevention Research Center, the Center on Aging, the Center for Health Ethics and Law, the Center for Rural Emergency Medicine, the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, the Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, and others. We are adjacent to and a frequent research and educational collaborator with CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
