The University of Memphis is a comprehensive urban university and is classified as a Carnegie Doctoral Research Extensive public institution. There are six colleges and four professional schools, enrolling approximately 20,000 students of which 4,300 are in graduate programs. Opportunities exist for collaboration with various University research centers including the FedEx Institute of Technology, W. Harry Feinstone Center for Genomic Research, Methodist Le Bonheur Center for Healthcare Economics, Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change, and the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy. Our new Memphis Research Consortium (http://www.memphisresearchconsortium.org) with $6.5 million of state funding this year establishes the opportunity for supporting research within the areas of childhood obesity, informatics, systems modeling, and behavioral epidemiology to address key areas of focus in children’s health improvement, clinical and behavioral informatics, and public health genomics. Collaborative agreements allow for cross-institutional work with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center as well as partnerships with Baptist Memorial Health Care, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and other community health clinics and systems. Founded in 2007, our School of Public Health provides a stimulating academic environment in a metropolitan setting that supports excellence and innovation in education, research, and community engagement to enhance the public health of local communities and throughout Tennessee. The School presently offers an accredited Master of Health Administration degree, the Master of Public Health, PhD programs in Social & Behavioral Sciences and Epidemiology, with a third PhD program in Health Systems & Policy under development.
