Company Information: The Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for a Maseeh Professorship in Mathematical Sciences to begin Fall 2012. The intent is to fill this faculty position at the Associate Professor level with tenure or tenure track. However, exceptional candidates at all levels will be seriously considered. The positions are part of a broad university initiative to develop a world class program in computational mathematics and statistics at Portland State University. The initiative is supported by a $3.9 million gift received recently from the Massiah Foundation. The gift endows three faculty positions in computational mathematics and statistics: “Maseeh Distinguished Chair in Mathematical Sciences” and two “Maseeh Professorships in Mathematical Sciences” and provides support for graduate research fellowships and a colloquium and lecture series. Position Title: Maseeh Professorship in Mathematical Sciences

Duties & Responsibilities: The current search is a continuation of this initiative after last year's successful hiring of the Maseeh Chair in Mathematical Sciences. The new faculty is expected to participate in the further development of a strong and highly visible research and educational program in the area of computational mathematics and statistics. We are looking for exceptional applicants with an outstanding record of research, external funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching. We are particularly interested in mathematician and statisticians who can demonstrate the willingness and ability to expand the multidisciplinary outreach of the department into such areas as health sciences, engineering and computer science, general science or finance and business. The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and actively participate in supervising graduate students, as well as conduct research. In particular, it is expected that the new hire will actively contribute to our Mathematical Sciences PhD program (http://www.mth.pdx.edu/programs/phd.asp) by offering new courses and attracting outstanding students.

Position Qualifications: Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree (preferably in Mathematical Sciences or Statistics). Commitment to teaching and the ability to work within a diverse research group are expected. Applicants should include a current CV, a statement of interest that contains a discussion of what the candidate can bring to the position, a research agenda, a description of the candidate’s outreach and teaching philosophies, and at least three letters of recommendation.
