The Molecular Epidemiology Team at the Institute of Cancer Research is investigating the causes of cancer through the use of exposure assessment and biomarkers in epidemiological studies. The aim of this research is to provide insights into biological mechanisms of carcinogenesis, and to improve risk assessment tools that could facilitate the development of targeted prevention and screening strategies.

Duties & Responsibilities:
The post holder will be expected to work on the following, as required: • To identify, develop and implement suitable tools and analytical techniques for the analysis of data, including large datasets derived from microarray and sequencing technologies. • To conduct statistical analyses. • To work on the development and definition of study questions with investigators. This will often include a review of the available literature and analysis of data from other sources. • To prepare scientific papers for conference presentation and publication. • To contribute to the development of research protocols, particularly with reference to statistical considerations of sample size and analysis strategy. Any other duties that may be required which are consistent with the nature and grade of the post. Position Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS The applicant must have a Masters or PhD degree in the field of biostatistics, computational science, epidemiology or other related areas. We will consider applications from PhD students expected to graduate in 2012. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE The following skills and experience are essential: • Good knowledge of statistical packages for analysis of epidemiological data such as R, STATA, S-Plus, SAS. • Good knowledge in managing databases, preferably Microsoft Access. • Experience in statistical analysis of large and complex datasets. • Numeracy, accuracy and attention to detail. • Good communication skills (oral and written). • Good organisational and time management skills. • To work unsupervised and under own initiative, as well as cooperatively as part of multidisciplinary teams. The following skills are highly desirable: • Experience in analyses of array data, such as gene expression, methylation and SNP arrays. • Experience in mining public databases. • Experience of one or more operating systems. • Knowledge of a high-level programming language (e.g. Perl, C/C++, or equivalent). • Understanding of medical terminology. QUALITIES AND ATTRIBUTES • Highly organised and methodical. • Proactive and enthusiastic. • Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff inside and outside the research group and with collaborating centres. • Able to deal appropriately with confidential information. • Ability to adhere to deadlines. • A willingness to learn.
Salary Range:
£26,996 to £37,476 per annum
Benefits:
The appointment will be on a Fixed Term Contract for 2 years with potential for renewal thereafter. Standard benefits to ICR employees will apply.
