The root of the School of Statistics goes back to 1950 when the discipline of statistics was initially set up in Renmin University of China (RUC). Two years later, the Department of Statistics was founded, which indicated the emergence of such departments among economic disciplines, and in July 2003, the School of Statistics was officially approved by RUC. In recent years, we have been actively forging the combination of statistical theories with their applications, and expanding the area of statistical teaching and research. It, being entitled the National Key Discipline, has become the leader in the filed of applied statistics in China. The Center for Applied Statistics, one of the key research institutes for the Humanities and Social Sciences in China, was also founded in the School of Statistics. By so far, it holds programs for doctors' degree in the majors of statistics and risk management & actuarial science, programs for masters' degree in the majors of statistics, probability & mathematical statistics, risk management & actuarial science and epidemics & biostatistics, and a postdoctoral program in applied economics. There are 31 teachers in the School of Statistics, including 13 full professors (also tutors to Ph.D. postgraduates), 14 associate professors, 7 adjunct professors and 10 visiting professors. Ever since the foundation, more than 5,000 students have graduated from this department/school. In September 2009, there are totally 553 students in the school consisting of 318 undergraduates, 162 postgraduates and 73 Ph.D. postgraduates. In the recent 10 years, more than 1/3 of the students are engaged in the areas of finance, insurance, information, and etc., and more than 1/5 of the students continue to pursue higher degrees.
