University of Wisconsin-Madison
Biostatistician position: Masters level

The ocular epidemiology group within the department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Wisconsin in Madison is looking for a biostatistician to work with several large longitudinal epidemiologic studies of eye disease. One study is the Wisconsin Epidemiologic Study of Diabetic Retinopathy (WESDR) which has been following people with diabetes from southern Wisconsin for the past 25 years to evaluate risk factors for diabetic retinopathy and other long term complications of diabetes. The study has international recognition and has resulted in over 200 peer-reviewed publications. Another study is the Beaver Dam Eye Study (BDES) which has been following older adults from Beaver Dam, WI (about an hour northeast of Madison) since 1988. The primary focus of this study is age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataract. This large study also has a wealth of information on other traits such as visual function, refraction, retinal vessel diameter, frailty, cancer, hypertension and diabetes. In addition, the population contains many related individuals and genetic data are available for analysis. This internationally recognized study has resulted in over 250 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to these two studies, the group collaborates on a number of other epidemiological studies including the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES), the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES), the Renin Angiotensin System Study (RASS) and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

The group includes other statisticians, data managers, examiners, computer programmers and study coordinators. Tasks will relate to analyses of collected data, including manuscript and scientific report preparation and collaboration with other investigators using these data. Knowledge of more complex statistical methods and tests, especially related to longitudinal cohort studies and mixed models is recommended. Comfort working with the SAS statistical package is required. Involvement in study development, quality control and data management will be required as new data are collected. There are many opportunities for authoring papers, presenting research results at national meetings, exploration of novel statistical analyses and involvement in study development and grant preparation for a variety of research projects.
