Applications are invited for two appointments in the new national Centre for Advanced Tribology (nCATS), recently established by the UK Government Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) at the University of Southampton. The Centre is within the School of Engineering Sciences and is in collaboration with the Schools of Electronics and Computer Science, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Medicine and the Statistical Sciences Research Institute. The University is in the top ten of UK Universities for both research quality and research income.

Tribology is the interdisciplinary science and technology of all interacting surfaces and interfaces in relative motion and is immensely important to the successful operation of engineered machines and natural mechanisms of all scales. It is core, for example, to the health and quality of life of patients, and energy efficient machines.

The appointees will develop and manage multi-disciplinary research between collaborating schools and will have access to facilities and mentoring from senior staff from within these schools.

For the Lectureship, you should have an excellent research background in developing Statistical Methods and applying them to problems in science or engineering, with ability to win research income and an excellent publication record. For the Research Fellowship, you will require a strong research background in Statistical Methods.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professor S.M. Lewis (S.M.Lewis@soton.ac.uk). For more information on the national Centre for Advanced Tribology, please visit www.soton.ac.uk/ses/research/nCATS.

Both posts are available from 1 October 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter.  Interviews are planned for 30 June to 18 July 2008. For more information and to apply online see www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. Please quote the relevant job reference number as listed above.
