Senior Research Associate (7093BR)

Job Description:

Provide statistical consulting and advanced statistical methodology expertise to support and enable experimental planning, data analysis, and complex trait modeling research in the Breeding Technology group. The position will support the expanding advanced statistical design and analysis needs for complex field experiments as well as QTL analysis and prediction research and development.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Contributes to state-of-the-art statistical research to develop and implement QTL detection and prediction approaches. Works closely with others to evaluate contrasting approaches based on different implementations of the mixed linear model (e.g. REML and Bayesian approaches).

Support for research, development and implementation of state-of-the-art phenotypic analysis. Provides experimental design and analysis consultation scientists within the organization.

Remains current on existing and new statistical methodologies by participating in professional meetings, career development activities, and by encouraging others to bring information into research activities.

Uses advanced statistical knowledge and professional statistical modeling concepts in accordance with company objectives to solve complex biological problems in creative and effective ways.

Facilitates information flow between team members, project leaders, and managers.

Educational Qualifications Desired:

Masters degree in statistics, or commensurate experience in statistical support and analysis and minimum of 2 to 4 years of industry related experience required, or equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience.

Competencies and Experience Desired:

A strong emphasis on quantitative and computational analysis is preferred, with established competencies in statistical tools such as ASREML, R, SAS, or S-Plus. A solid foundation in statistical theory and applied analysis methodologies, especially mixed linear models, Bayesian Statistics, QTL analysis, multivariate techniques, exploratory data analysis and visualization. Experience applying statistical analyses in a biological setting, especially plant breeding or genetics, is a strong advantage.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with individuals of differing scientific backgrounds. Strong ability to organize time and projects and to work as part of a team. Ability to multi-task, contributing to several projects at any given time.

Knowledge of current and new statistical concepts and methodologies and ability to solve complex problems by determining and using appropriate statistical techniques. Proven academic excellence in studies of Biology, Genetics and plant or animal Breeding. Demonstrated experience in conducting statistical analyses of field trials and plant breeding is strongly preferred.

Strong computing skills. The ability to undertake advanced mixed model analyses of large plant breeding field experiments using the ASREML software. Proficient in statistical programming languages, including SAS, Splus, ASREML, and Genstat.

Strong consulting/interpersonal skills and ability to work well as part of a scientific team.

An ability to multitask effectively under tight time and resource constraints.
