Background Information
Guanghua School of Management is one of most leading business schools in China. Currently, it holds total of nine different departments, covering the area of economics, finance, accounting, marketing, strategy, management science, and also statistics. The school offers excellent programs at various levels (e.g., undergraduate, graduate, MBA, EMBA, EDP, etc) with a total enrollment about 3,000 students each year.
The Department of Business Statistics & Econometrics, established in 2002, is ever the first statistics department in a business school in China. Currently, the department holds four regular faculty members but plays a very important role. Specifically, the department needs to provide high standard statistical courses and/or trainings for essentially every program operated by the school, e.g., undergraduate, graduate, MBA, EMBA, EDP, etc. Secondly, the department needs to provide high standard statistical consulting services for the faculties of other department (e.g., finance, marketing, etc) and/or research institutes. We are very proud to be able to bring statistical thinking into real business management and research!
Position Description
Currently, we have two tenure-track positions open at assistant professor level. An ideal applicant should hold a PHD degree in either Statistics and/or Econometrics. The expertise in quality control, survival analysis, and/or spatial statistics is very welcome. Moreover, being able to teach fluently in mandarin is also necessarily required. The applicants with partial training in economics, finance, marketing, and/or management science will be appreciated. Per school requirement, the teaching load for an assistant professor is at least 9 credits per year, which means a total of 3 or 4 courses every year. Among those courses, we typically require at least one course for MBA students. Thus, those applicants, who can teach statistical ideas easily to the audiences WITHOUT strong quantitative training (e.g., MBA students) are particularly welcome!
Financial Support
The school is trying all the best to pay competitively at an international standard. Typically, the annual salary of an assistant professor starts at about 40,000 USD (about 320,000 RMB).
The school offers a generous re-location package with about 350,000 RMB by the time of your arrival. This includes a settle-down allowance of 150,000 RMB plus a lump-sum of 200,000 RMB for those who wish to buy their own apartment.
To encourage outstanding research, a start-up research grant of 50,000RMB per year is available for the first two years.
In addition to that, for any research grant received from well-recognized national research institute (e.g., Nature Science Foundation of China, NSFC), school matches 50% up to 100,000RMB. This means if you receive a 200,000RMB grant from NSFC, the school will award you another 100,000RMB research grant as bonus. Various other smaller scale research grants are also available.
The school pay generous bonus for any publication on a journal cited by SCI. Currently, the highest bonus for one single author publication in Annals, Biometrika, JASA, or JRSSB can be as high as 60,000 RMB per article.
To encourage faculties to attend international conference, the school pays for every regular faculty 2,000 USD per year for attending any academic conference and/or workshop outside of mainland China. Mini travel grants might also be available from the department for attending domestic conferences.
One-year sabbatical leave can be arranged for faculties having served school for a total of five years. Alternatively, half-year sabbatical leave is also possible for faculties after serving school for three years.
Challenges & Opportunities
As the ever first statistics department founded in a business school in China, we are facing challenges and also opportunities.
Challenges might come from the fact that we are a relatively small department, which cannot cover every important statistical research area. Our ultimate department size might be 8 to 10 regular faculties. Challenges might also come from the fact we need to offer easy-to-understand statistical training for many non-statistical students, particularly those MBA students. Many challenges might also come from many other aspects. Thus, the applicant should be well-prepared to face those challenges and the capability to work with us as one team is highly appreciated.
When we face those challenges, tremendous amount of valuable opportunities also exists. Due to the fast economics growth of China, many real problems are generated from economics decision, financial market, marketing research, etc. All those problems need to be studied empirically based on real data, which can be very unique yet valuable opportunity for novel methodology development for statistical publication.
