and the Linus Pauling Institute
(http://lpi.oregonstate.edu
).
The overall mission of the EHS Center is to understand the underlying
basic mechanisms by which individuals can reduce their risk to cancer,
inflammatory damage, and chronic degenerative diseases by improving
their
ability to respond to environmental stresses through chemoprevention,
diet, and other preventive strategies. To that end the research
mission for the EHS Center is to generate new understandings of the
effects of environmental agents on proteins, nucleic acids, and gene
expression.
The mission of LPI is to determine the function and role of
micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and phytochemicals (chemicals
from
plants) in promoting optimum health and preventing and treating
disease;
to determine the role of oxidative and nitrative stress and
antioxidants
in human health and disease; and to advance knowledge in areas that
were
of interest to Linus Pauling through research and educational
activities. Major areas of research in the Institute encompass
heart disease, cancer, aging, and neurodegenerative
diseases.
OSU is one of only two American universities to hold the Land-, Sea-,
Sun- and Space-Grant designations and is the only Oregon institution
recognized for its “very high research activity” (RU/VH) by the
Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. OSU is composed of 11
academic colleges with strengths in natural resources, earth dynamics
and
sustainability, life sciences, entrepreneurship and the arts and
sciences. OSU is Oregon’s largest public research university,
conducting more than 60 percent of the research funded throughout the
state’s university system.
OSU is located in Corvallis, a community of 53,000 people situated in
the
Willamette Valley between Portland and Eugene. Ocean beaches, lakes,
rivers, forests, high desert, the rugged Cascade and Coast Ranges, and
the urban amenities of the Portland metropolitan area are all within a
100 mile drive of Corvallis. Approximately 15,800 undergraduate and
3,500
graduate students are enrolled at OSU, including 2,800 U.S. students of
color and 900 international students.
