Departments of Psychiatry and Biostatistics, Columbia University
The Departments of Psychiatry and Biostatistics at Columbia University, and the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI), are recruiting one or more biostatistics faculty members.
The appointee will hold an inter-disciplinary faculty appointment in the Departments of Psychiatry and Biostatistics at Columbia University, and will be a member of the Division of Biostatistics and Data Coordination (DBDC) in Psychiatry and NYSPI. The level (full rank, associate, or assistant) and track (tenure or non-tenure), and New York State line funding, will be commensurate with credentials and experience.
The appointee will perform the following functions under the supervision of the Director of DBDC and the Chair of the Biostatistics Department: to provide biostatistics support in research programs and grants development in collaboration with faculty members and investigators in Psychiatry and NYSPI; to conduct research and seek grant funding in biostatistical methods relevant to applications in psychiatry; to provide services in teaching, training and mentoring functions; to provide mentorship and supervision to staff members in the Division; and to provide services in administrative committees. In addition, an appointee at a senior level (associate or full rank) will also provide mentorship and supervision to junior faculty in the Division.
Psychiatry/NYSPI (http://columbiapsychiatry.org/ and http://www.nyspi.org/), chaired by Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, is preeminent in psychiatric research, education and clinical care, with world-class research and training programs and state of the art clinical services that are ranked among the best in the U.S. DBDC (http://columbiapsychiatry.org/research/divisions/biostatistics.html) is one of twenty-one research divisions in Psychiatry/NYSPI, currently with five Ph.D. level biostatistics faculty members, headed by Dr. Naihua Duan as the Division Director. The Biostatistics Department (http://mailman.columbia.edu/biostat/index.html), chaired by Dr. Bruce Levin, is a leading center of excellence in biostatistics research, clinical trials, and other areas of biostatistics applications; the department ranked fourth in the nation according to a recent evaluation published in Chronicle of Higher Education (http://chronicle.com/stats/productivity/page.php?bycat=true&primary=4&secondary=136&year=2007). The Biostatistics Department and Psychiatry/NYSPI are located in adjacent buildings connected through enclosed bridges; the physical proximity facilitates close collaborations.
Eligible candidates must have the following qualifications: a doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, psychometrics, or a related discipline; a strong record of independent and collaborative research and teaching; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and a demonstrated interest in developing and applying statistical methods to important problems in psychiatric research. It is desirable but not required for the candidate to have expertise and experience in one or more of the following research areas: clinical trials, psychometrics, health services research, brain imaging, clinical epidemiology, and statistical genetics. In addition, candidates at a senior level must also have an outstanding record of independent and collaborative research and teaching; a substantial bibliography of peer-reviewed publications with a balanced combination of methodological and collaborative research contributions; and extensive experience collaborating on funded, peer-reviewed research in psychiatry or related areas in health sciences.
