On a department-wide level, the Bio-Statistician helps design and performs statistical analyses to support Investigators within the Departments of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine.
The primary duties will involve collaboration with investigators to answer important questions in these departments. The biostatistician will help design studies, estimate sample size and power, write statistical sections of papers and grants, conduct statistical analyses, and help interpret results.
Experience with programming in SAS, and working with various database structures are crucial components of this position. The biostatistician may also work with a senior biostatician to develop new statistical methods needed to analyze the studies.

Works as part of a group of researchers within the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, including the STAR (SICU Translational Research) Center.
Advises and educates Research Fellows/Residents and departmental Faculty and staff on study designs and analysis of data related to their studies. Troubleshoots study design problems.
Provides statistical support to investigators within the Department.
Designs and performs analyses, and interprets the results.
Writes complex programs using SAS, including SAS macros, as well as other statistical and analytical software packages.
Collaborates with clinicians and senior statisticians to generate reports of statistical results.
Participates in both formal and informal basic bio-statistical education/training of Fellows/Residents and Faculty and research nurses.
Helps conferring with hospital personnel, medical staff and department heads to develop specifications for report formats, data entry forms and work flow.
Meets with study investigators periodically to review the execution of study design and data collection performs interim statistical analysis.
Serves as primary contact for study design and analysis for physicians and others involved in studies.
Performs other duties and responsibilities at the supervisor’s request.

MS required in bio-statistics or a related field. PhD-level biostatisticians will also be considered
Experience in study design and statistical analyses
Knowledge of statistical techniques such as logistic regression, Cox regression, repeated measures methods.
Collaborative experience in a biostatistician position in a medical research environment strongly preferred.
Working knowledge of SAS programming.
Knowledge in bio-informatics useful, but not required.
Must be deadline oriented.
