THE
DEPARTMENT:
Programs
offered by the Department of Statistics include an established and
growing M.S. in Statistics (with a new Option in Computational
Statistics), B.S., Minor, and post-baccalaureate Certificate programs
in Statistics. The Department also teaches basic Statistics courses
for many major programs throughout the University.
The M.S. and B.S. programs focus largely on applications and methodology, and they are designed to prepare students for employment in the large and diverse Bay Area job market for statisticians, positions nationwide and, in some cases, for Ph.D. study at major research universities. Currently, there are about 80 students in the M.S. program and smaller numbers in the undergraduate programs. Most alumni continue their ties with the Department, often providing advice about curriculum development.
Statistics faculty members are devoted to teaching, maintain active research programs, are involved in University affairs, and participate actively in local and national statistical societies. A modern computer lab consists of 20 Pentium-4 personal computers running the latest statistical software (including SAS, S-Plus/R, Minitab, SPSS, and StatXact). Applied courses include extensive computer use and even elementary and theoretical courses meet in the lab at least a few times a quarter. Class sizes for elementary classes rarely exceed 50, and for advanced courses are mostly below 30. To learn more about the Department visit http://www.sci.csueastbay.edu/statistics.
